How can Council do better?
I am concerned with the wastage of ratepayers money by council in the servicing of the shire especially in the western area. Over the years I have noticed taht grading of gravel roads is often poorly done with roads corrugating within weeks of a grade, of the camber of the road being too steep and with holes made by machinery getting bogged not filled in. I have also noticed the poor workmanship in slashing roadsides with areas left unslashed. Yet contractors seem to get paid for their work regardless of the quality as no council employee seems prepared to challenge the standard of the work. Although it is some years back now, following the 2014 fires it took three attempts to have stumps of dead trees removed from road verges to allow for the areas to be effectively slashed in future. I assume that each job was paid for despite the first two being unsatisfactory… In more recent times following the February 13th storm three seperate trips were made by the same contractor to clear and remove fallen trees fron roadsides yet despite this large stump holes still remain. Council needs to take responsibility and appropriate action where contractor work is substandard instead of wasting ratepayer resources by having second and third attempts at completing works.
Thanks for your comments Lionel. I agree there seems to be no, or inadequate, evaluation of the quality of the work and no repercussions if it isn’t done properly. Adequate and timely monitoring and evaluation of all project work is necessary, and council needs to listen to community feedback and act to make contractors fix up faulty work, cost free and in a timely manner, or ensure they don’t get any more work from Council
