The vast majority of Councillors work extremely hard with many working well over 30 hours a week as well as maintaining jobs or running businesses. They are often faced with enormous challenges such as being given just a couple of days to read and digest >600 pages of documentation before being expected to vote on it in Council. There have been instances in other Councils where Councillors have voted to support officer recommendations that have led to things such as very significant changes planning schemes being passed without Councillors being aware that they have been ‘buried’ in the documentation. How can this type of thing be avoided? What recommendations do you have for improving Councillor effectiveness that don’t add to an already substantial workload?
